Performance Measurement Reports

December 1, 2020

In 2016, the Canada Council for the Arts developed a performance measurement framework to promote accountability and transparency, allowing the Canada Council to report on the results of its investments.

Research goal

The reports outline the impact of the Council’s granting programs within the arts sector and beyond according to the performance measurement framework and logic models.

Methods

The Council analyzed almost 1,600 responses from distinct recipients to an outcomes survey, as well as CADAC and Canada Council funding data, from distinct grant recipients from 2017-18.

Outcomes

Highlights from the reports include:

  • The Explore and Create program provided opportunities to experiment, explore and take artistic risks. Grant recipients produced a variety of works that were shared through nearly 12,000 events that welcomed 5.5 million attendees.
  • The Engage and Sustain program enabled arts organizations to plan effectively and maintain sustainable operations. Grant recipients offered almost 36,000 education, audience development and outreach activities, engaging almost 4 million participants.
  • The Supporting Artistic Practice program strengthened support for artists to develop their practice and create new work and strengthened infrastructure for the arts in Canada.
  • The Arts Across Canada program enabled artists and arts organizations to disseminate high quality artistic and literary works to the Canadian public. Project grant recipients presented or performed in 112 communities across Canada.
  • The Arts Abroad program enabled Canadian artists to advance international careers. Project grant recipients shared their works in 69 countries.

Note : Findings from the Creating, Knowing and Sharing program were not included as the impact of funding for Indigenous arts and cultures was explored as a separate project.
