The Halifax Black Film Festival presents movies by Black directors from around the world and offers a range of related activities.

A platform for marginalized filmmakers

The fifth edition of the festival, in February 2021, saw organizers put together programming that featured 75 films from 10 different countries. It also included talks, forums, Facebook Live events and development activities intended for high school students. The festival provided marginalized Black filmmakers with a platform and gave many of them an opportunity to network and show their films to large audiences for the first time. Half the programming was devoted to local Black artists.

Promoting diversity onscreen and across society

The festival complements other festivals by supporting artists who are not featured in other venues. It serves both artists and the independent film scene by promoting Black artists and diversity onscreen and in real life.
