A Long-Awaited French-Language Translation of Dawn Dumont’s Glass Beads

Publishing house Éditions Hannenorak is having Glass Beads translated into French. The collection was written by one of the most well-known female voices in the English-speaking Indigenous community.
Highlighting social issues
Hailing from Wendake, Quebec, Indigenous publishing house Éditions Hannenorak is supporting a translation of Glass Beads, written by Plains Cree author Dawn Dumont. Daniel Grenier’s translation, Perles de verre, was released in fall 2021. A collection of 23 cohesive short stories, Dumont’s work recounts the life of four Indigenous youths who leave their reserve and resettle in Saskatoon. An agile interplay between tragedy and humour, Dumont’s writing highlights social issues such as racism, reparative justice, and Indigenous autonomy and cultural pride.
Promoting an Indigenous artist to a French-speaking audience
Éditions Hannenorak wishes to promote this important author and to ensure that a female Indigenous voice is heard by francophones—Indigenous and non-Indigenous alike.
