Toronto-Based Yamantaka // Sonic Titan Embark on Lengthy European Tour
Known for integrating elements from Noh theatre, Chinese opera and Indigenous cultures, the rock band performed in a dozen European cities in 2019.
Touring France and England, with detours into Germany and the Netherlands
Rotterdam, Lille, Brighton, London, Paris, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Zürich, Prague and Hasselt are just a few of the cities that welcomed a flamboyant Yamantaka // Sonic Titan rock show. The band is having a productive year, with shows scheduled in the United States and Denmark in the fall. The Canada Council for the Arts supports tours that present a lesser-known aspect of Canadian culture. The tour of this unusual interdisciplinary—and undisciplined!—rock band from Ontario is a great example of this.
A theatrical and ritualized approach to rock music
Far removed from your conventional rock show, Yamantaka // Sonic Titan gives energetic and theatrical performances, surprising concertgoers with striking makeup inspired by Noh theatre and stage productions that take advantage of immersive digital technologies. The members have culturally diverse backgrounds and create works inspired by their mixed cultural heritage, namely Asian and Indigenous. Challenging racial stereotypes and reappropriating colonial representations of their cultures, they are at their best onstage, rocking out with audiences everywhere they go.
