Grant Helps Gallery Create Zines with Newcomers and Indigenous Peoples

The Void Gallery partnered with Saskatoon community members to create small art-quality magazines (zines), with a focus on sharing stories to promote cultural understanding, awareness and acceptance.

Bringing art practice to underserved communities

Four Saskatoon-based artists worked with community members to develop their art in zines. The focus was on working with underserved communities in the city, including Indigenous Peoples and newcomers. The gallery ran six-week workshops with three different organizations, providing opportunities for 24 participants—including many youth—to make art. The workshops also focused on critical reflection and personal growth through art.

Sharing stories to support cross-cultural understanding

Producing the zines offered opportunities for members of the general public, newcomers and Indigenous communities to hear each other’s stories across language and other barriers. To broaden the reach of the project, Void organized a launch event and distributed the zines throughout Saskatoon in coffee shops and other locations, offering public reading material.
