Funding for Winnipeg gallery supports efforts to showcase Indigenous art

An Indigenous art resource for Canada

As the only Indigenous contemporary, non-profit art gallery in Winnipeg—and one of just three Indigenous artist-run centres in Canada—Urban Shaman Gallery is an educational arts resource for local and national galleries, arts organizations, educational institutions, community-based organizations, businesses and the general arts community. It works diligently to provide thought-provoking programming while supporting Manitoba’s Indigenous artists. It also invites national and international artists, and supports work by emerging artists.

Socially engaged art

Urban Shaman Gallery also makes a conscious effort to look for socially engaged art. An example is the recent exhibition A Place Between – A 60’s Scoop Arts Project, a ground-breaking installation that brought new faces into the gallery from both the arts and general community. It was accompanied by events like film screenings, a public-art billboard and a symposium and feast.
