Grant helps organization stage concerts featuring Northern composers and musicians

The Longest Night Society partnered with local musicians and composers to stage two contemporary music concerts performed by the 20-piece Problematic Orchestra

Shining a light on Northern musical talent

The society’s mandate is to support the development of the Problematic Orchestra, a semi-professional contemporary chamber orchestra in Whitehorse. The orchestra is an eclectic ensemble made up of 20 Northern musicians under the direction of composer Daniel Janke. In 2017, the Longest Night Society offered a concert program of contemporary music by Northern composers performed by the orchestra. The orchestra incorporated “comprovisation,” improvisation and theatrical and electro-acoustic elements.

Building on a foundational event

The society first took on the mandate of supporting the growth and development of Problematic Orchestra and promoting contemporary chamber orchestra music in Yukon in 2016. By making the concert program a foundational event, it aims to advance artistic practice in the North, build a repertoire for performances and create future opportunities in the community for years to come.
