Emma Pennell

Emma Pennell is a Mi’kmaw operatic soprano and poet from Ktaqmkuk, raised off the grid in rural Northern Ontario. Their deep connection to land and identity inspires both their music and advocacy. A 2025-26 Canadian Opera Company Ensemble Studio artist, Emma holds a Bachelor’s in Voice Performance and Indigenous Studies from Western University, and advanced diplomas from Cambrian College and The Glenn Gould School. They are a passionate advocate for Indigenous voices in music and co-authored the Indigenous Policy Paper for Ontario Undergraduate Student Alliance (OUSA). Emma recently performed at Koerner Hall with Tanya Tagaq and completed a residency at Banff Centre.

The prize

The Bernard Diamant Prize offers classical singers from Canada, under age 35 an opportunity to pursue their career through further studies. They may take singing classes with a coach, master or professor, or even attend voice training workshops.

Background

Bernard Diamant, a baritone and emeritus professor of music, understood the importance of relying on youth and artistic excellence. His generous bequest to the Canada Council and memorial gifts from his friends attest to his engagement.
