Trade of Culture and Sport Products (TCSP)
The Trade of Culture and Sport Products (TCSP) are timely estimates of the international and inter-provincial trade of culture and sport goods and services made possible through a joint initiative of Statistics Canada and a number of partners, including the Canada Council for the Arts, Canadian Heritage, and others.
Research goal
The TSCP is an extension of the Culture Satellite Account (CSA), an accounting framework developed to measure the economic importance of culture (including arts and heritage), and sport to the Canadian economy.
Methods
Data are extracted from administrative files and derived from other Statistics Canada surveys and other sources.
Outcomes
Key highlights from the Trade of Culture and Sports Products, 2022, released in October 2024 include:
- Canada exported $24.5 billion of culture products in 2022, up 8.6% from the previous year.
- The rise was led by increased exports in the domains of written and published works, live performance, and audio-visual and interactive media. At the subdomain level, crafts, film and video and interactive media accounted over half of total culture exports in 2022.
- Culture imports increased 11.0%, reaching $31.9 billion in 2022, led by visual and applied arts, audio-visual and interactive media, and live performance. At the subdomain level, craft and broadcasting drove the increase of imports of culture products in 2022.
- The United States has remained Canada’s largest trading partner for culture products, representing 68.2% of exports and 65.2% of imports, in 2022.
- The second most notable trading partner was the European Union, with 10.9% of exports and 10.3% of imports.
