The Punctuate! Theatre is investing in emerging works created by Indigenous, Black and racialized people by supporting the artistic and administrative processes.

Raising the voices of Indigenous, Black and racialized artists

The Punctuate! Theatre aims to create the largest oeuvre of emerging theatre in Edmonton made of up majority Indigenous, Black and racialized artists. The Theatre views investment in the development of new works as crucial. Founded in 2010, it hopes to support the development of several new writing projects and foster public recognition for them, especially during the pandemic.

Mentorship and public readings

Fifteen young playwrights have received personalized support from facilitator Matt Mackenzie, Punctuate! Theatre’s artistic director and an award-winning Métis playwright himself. They were also guided by an administrator in writing grant applications and conducting funding research. The guidance also led to public readings. Twelve of the 15 playwrights identified as being from marginalized communities.
