Bringing Canadian Arts to Germany

The Canada Council for the Arts has long supported the presence of Canadian artists and arts organizations in Germany. In late 2019, the Council launched its own initiatives and engaged in several partnerships to share even more Canadian creation with audiences in Germany. This extra stimulus was designed to complement Canada as the Guest of Honour at the 2020 Frankfurt Book Fair, the largest global marketplace in the book publishing sector.

With the global spread of COVID-19, the Council’s partners continue to revise their activities and provide new information on their plans:

Canada FBM2020

Canada FBM2020, a not-for-profit organization in charge of literary programming as part of the Frankfurt Book Fair, has created an FAQ to provides the latest information on its literary programming.

Singular pluraity


jazzahead!, is a trade fair, conference, and showcase festival for the international jazz scene in Bremen where Canada will be the next focus country. The festivities for 2020 have been cancelled and postponed to April 29 – May 2, 2021.

Tanzmesse, Germany’s foremost contemporary dance festival, where Canada is slated to be the focus in 2020, will provide updates on the status of their event as plans evolve.

Council-led initiatives

Incentive for Purchasing Translation Rights and for Publishing in German

In partnership with Canadian Heritage, the Canada Council offered a funding initiative for translating Canadian literary and non-literary works into German. The Incentive closed on April 22, 2020.

Canada as Guest of Honour: Special Initiative for Canadian Artists

The Canada Council created this initiative to support Canadian artists, groups and organizations with artistic engagements in Germany between October 2019 and October 2020.

Canada as Guest of Honour: Special Initiative for German Cultural Organizations

Through this initiative, the Canada Council offered support to non-commercial German organizations wishing to present Canadian arts and culture in Germany in 2020.
