Arts Facts using CADAC Data: 49 Media Arts Presenters

June 1, 2016

Prepared by the Research, Evaluation and Performance Measurement Section, in collaboration with the Media Arts Section, this report highlights CADAC (Canadian Arts Data / Données sur les arts au Canada) facts on a sampling of Presentation organizations across Canada. Using CADAC data, the report provides a picture of Canada Council funded media arts presenters, their activities and organizational stability.

The data in the report centres on four themes: economic impact; Canadian artists reaching audiences; access to the arts; and public participation and support. Some of the key findings from the 2015 report on Media Arts Presenters are:

  • The majority of earned revenue, $18.9M or 64% in 2013, came from production and presenting / hosting admissions and box office.
  • Public funding to these 49 media arts presenters remained relatively stable, increasing slightly from $19.1M in 2009 to $20.8M in 2013.
  • In 2013, more than 19,000 film / video / media screenings were programmed and presented locally. In addition, 3,910 screenings were presented nationally and 464 internationally.
  • The total attendance at all film / video / media screenings is more than 1.9M.

A similar report on media arts production centres is also available here.

CADAC is a web‐based system which has now been in place for five years and is beginning to provide a rich source of reliable data on almost 2,000 Canadian arts organizations. CADAC partners include provincial, territorial and municipal arts funders (https://www.cadac.ca/).
