Grant helps Atlantic theatre group offer responsive programming

Two Planks and a Passion Theatre is a rural organization with a focus on producing challenging Canadian drama and innovative Canadian adaptations of classic works that are relevant to the community.

Programming that responds to change

The theatre’s performance venue is 178 acres of farmland near the Ross Creek Centre for the Arts in Canning, Nova Scotia. Its carefully chosen programming for the next few seasons reflects its interest in examining current realities through the lens of a rural way of life that is rapidly disappearing. Programming choices also reflect the theatre’s response to populism, science denial, environmental crisis and misogyny.

Growing through diversity

Over the next few years, the theatre will focus on the need to attract more diverse artists—a challenge given its rural location. It is working to identify culturally diverse, emerging artists, those with disabilities, and Indigenous artists from the Mi’kma’ki territory where it works. It is also committed to participating in the arts capacity-building program, “ALL IN: A National Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Initiative for Canada’s Theatre Sector.”
