Nova Scotia artist Ryan Josey in residence at the Arteles Centre in Finland

In November 2017, Nova Scotia artist Ryan Josey received the first grant of his career for research during a residency in Finland.

An international setting to generate creative ideas

As a participant in the Enter Text international residency at the Arteles Centre in Hämeenkyrö, Finland, the young artist conducted quantitative research on Michel Foucault’s incomplete essay, Histoire de la sexualité, as the first phase of a visual artwork-in-progress about HIV. Ryan Josey benefited from an ideal creative environment and took part in several public discussions.

An embryonic international network

During this residency, Ryan Josey connected with many counterparts from around the world who, like him, are developing poetic material from existing texts. He plans to keep in touch with some of the writers and visual artists he met at a talk he gave about his work.
