Sandra Brewster

Sandra Brewster is a Canadian artist based in Toronto. A child of Guyanese parents, Sandra Brewster’s practice reflects a multilayered sense of identity born from the collision of place and time. She completed her BFA at York University and is a graduate of the Masters of Visual Studies program from the University of Toronto. Her work can be found in numerous private and public collections. She has exhibited internationally. Sandra Brewster is the recipient of The Gattuso Prize of CONTACT 2017, the Toronto Friends of Visual Arts Artist Prize in 2018, and was a finalist for the 2023 Scotiabank Photography Award. In 2024 she was the recipient of the prestigious Paul de Hueck and Norman Walford Career Achievement Award.

The prize

The Canada Council for the Arts Photography Prize is awarded to professional photographers for personal creative work or professional development. This award is the only Canada Council prize dedicated to photography.

Background

The prize was created in 1986 with funding from the Government of Canada and renamed the Canada Council for the Arts Photography Prize in 2024.
