About the Explore and Create Program

Explore and Create provides strategic leadership for the Explore and Create program.

This program advances Canadian artistic practices by encouraging artists to investigate creative processes and take risks that lead to the development of unique works destined to connect with the public. Funding is geared to support the program components of: Professional Development for Artists; Research and Creation; Concept to Realization; and, Artist-driven Organizations.

About the role

Under the direct supervision of the Director General, Arts Granting Programs Division, the Director plays a leadership role to enhance the Council’s dynamic support system for the arts in Canada. This includes:

  • Funding Canadian artists, arts professionals, groups and organizations; advancing public engagement with the arts in Canada and internationally; and advancing conditions for the creation and sharing of the arts in Canada.
  • Contributing to a growing network of resources available to strengthen the arts and inspiring sector innovation by supporting collaboration, targeted initiatives and career development opportunities for Canadian artists and arts professionals.

As the Director, you will:

  • be responsible for advancing a holistic Council approach to better support individual artists and arts workers, collectives and organizations in all regions of Canada in the realms of creation, production, presentation/distribution to the public and professional development;
  • ensure that the Council stimulates the emergence of new artists and new artistic endeavours for a diverse public;
  • enable the inclusion and participation of artists from Indigenous, culturally diverse, Deaf and disability, and Official Language Minority communities;
  • be responsible for the delivery of the Council’s funding model and granting programs;
  • work within a flexible and collaborative leadership model, and are assigned to lead specific programs, funds and initiatives by the Director General. These assignments may rotate based on operational and strategic needs;
  • articulate the Council’s vision and strategic goals, ensuring their Division is aligned, and identifying how their Division contributes to these goals in a manner that guides and motivates their team;
  • oversee one or more programs, funds or initiatives with a focus on achieving stated program objectives and results;
  • support other Program Directors in carrying out their mandates;
  • monitor, analyze and report on results against objectives in collaboration with colleagues in Research Evaluation and Performance Measurement in order to inform decision-making and program evaluation;
  • develop and lead strategic initiatives to proactively support the achievement of Council’s commitments as set out in its Strategic Plan;
  • provide operational leadership in one or more programs to ensure efficiency and integrity in program delivery including respect of budgets;
  • explain, present, and advocat Canada Council’s position, acting as an internal and external representative and liaison;
  • provide strategic foresight related to arts and culture to the Director General of AGP in order to inform decision-making about programs, funds and special initiatives;
  • provide direct support to the Director General of AGP as required.

You may be required to travel up to forty (40) days per year and on occasion, work irregular hours. The duties of this position require the direct supervision of two Program Managers, and has overall management responsibility for a large team of over thirty five (35) employees.

This position is in Ottawa. The Council provides eligible employees with financial assistance to help offset specific moving expenses associated with relocation to the National Capital Region (NCR).

Requirements of the position

Education

  • Undergraduate degree in arts management, communications, administration, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience in a field related to the responsibilities of the position.

Experience

  • 5 – 7 years in a people leadership role
  • Seven or more years of progressively responsible arts management and administration positions

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong critical thinking and business acumen, with the ability to assess qualitative and quantitative outcomes against the financial and program objectives of Explore and Create, and the ability to effectively steward public funds by monitoring performance/output.
  • Ability to translate the Council’s broad, strategic goals into program-specific actions and outcomes.
  • Strong people leadership skills to motivate, guide and support staff in delivering on stated program deliverables; and, to support employees’ career development and performance management needs.
  • Strong communications and collaboration skills, with the ability to develop and nurture relationships with key stakeholder groups (e.g. within Council, within arts communities in Canada and abroad, with governmental and/or institutional partners).

Bilingual Requirements

  • As an executive at the Council, the Director is expected to be bilingual and to be able to provide his or her employees with coaching, guidance, and performance management in the official language of their choice
  • This position requires the use of both official languages. The requirements in the second official language are: an advanced level in oral and in reading comprehension and an Intermediate level in writing.
