Program Context
The Alberta Creative Development Initiative (ACDI) is a partnership between the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and the Canada Council for the Arts, in collaboration with the Calgary Arts Development Authority and the Edmonton Arts Council. This targeted initiative is designed to enhance the continued development of the arts in Alberta.
This is a three-year initiative, with the possibility of a two-year extension. The program eligibility criteria, assessment criteria and other details may be modified following this competition.

Program Objectives
The objectives of the program are to:
- support the development of professional artists and arts organizations in Alberta
- foster a dynamic, vibrant arts community in Alberta
- enable the success of Alberta artists and arts organizations locally, provincially, nationally and internationally.

Program Description
The Alberta Creative Development Initiative: Grants to Individuals component supports projects by Alberta professional artists, arts administrators and collectives (examples of collectives are groups, bands and ensembles). Eligible applicants can request funding for projects that will advance their artistic practice and (or) their professional development.
Organizations are not eligible to apply to this component. They should refer instead to the Alberta Creative Development Initiative: Project Grants to Organizations component guidelines and application form, which are available on the Canada Council website.

Eligibility
Eligible Applicants
The program is open to Alberta-based professional artists, arts administrators and collectives working in all artistic disciplines and artistic practices currently supported by the Canada Council or the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, including collaborative projects and artists and community collaborations.
A professional artist is someone who:
- has specialized training in the field (not necessarily in academic institutions)
- is recognized as such by his or her peers
- has a history of public presentation
- is committed to devoting more time to artistic activity, if financially possible
- meets the specific eligibility criteria by discipline, as outlined in this document.
A professional arts administrator is someone who has been working in the arts in a professional administrative or managerial capacity for two years or longer.
Collectives must be made up of professional artists and must be represented by one individual who will take on the artistic, administrative and financial responsibility for the group (in other words, he or she will be the lead applicant). For this program, a collective may include artists from outside Alberta, but the majority of the participants must be residents of Alberta. The lead applicant must meet all the eligibility criteria for this program.
To be eligible for this program, you must be a Canadian Citizen or permanent resident as defined by Citizenship and Immigration Canada. You must have maintained a regular residence in Alberta in the past year and have been defined as an Alberta resident on your last tax return.
Ineligible Applicants
You are not eligible if you are a full-time undergraduate student at a school, college or university.
If you are a graduate or post-graduate student, you are eligible only if you meet the definition of a professional artist or arts administrator. Also, your proposed project cannot be related to your program of study and cannot be under the direct supervision of a university professor.
Other General Eligibility Criteria for All Applicants
You may apply to this program at each deadline, as long as the granting period for any previous ACDI grant that you hold has been completed.
If you have submitted an application to this program and have been unsuccessful, you may resubmit the same project to only one more ACDI competition.
Individual artists may apply for only one Canada Council grant to professional artists and one travel grant in any fiscal year (1 April to 31 March). However, the ACDI Grants to Individuals are not considered in the context of this restriction. In other words, you may apply to both this program and to another Canada Council program (if you meet the eligibility criteria for those programs). However, you cannot apply to more than one program for the same expenses or the same phase of activity.
If you are the lead applicant for a collective, you can apply for only one project per ACDI competition. However, you may apply as the lead applicant in one project and as a co-applicant in another project in the same ACDI competition.
You are encouraged to contact the Western Canada Program Officer, before applying, to confirm your eligibility for this program. You should be aware that meeting the eligibility criteria allows you to apply for a grant, but it does not guarantee funding.
You should also be aware that receiving a grant from the ACDI does not guarantee you success in other Canada Council programs or in Alberta Foundation for the Arts programs.
Eligible Projects
Project proposals in the following categories are eligible:
- research, creation, production and (or) dissemination projects
- professional development projects, including residencies.

Retroactive funding is not available. In other words, funding is not available for activities that are carried out before the competition deadline.
Eligible Expenses
Expenses that are directly related to the project are eligible, including:
- artists’ fees paid to other artists
- material costs
- equipment rental costs
- audience and market development costs
- dissemination costs

- subsistence, such as accommodation and meal costs (a maximum allowance of $2,000 per month).
